What is Yasmin?

The Yasmin birth control pill is a relatively new form of hormone-based contraception. Yasmin birth control pills contain a higher dose of estrogen than Yaz, with each pill containing 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol and 3 mg of drospirenone. Yasmin is taken on the traditional dosing schedule of 21/7 days. Yaz contains 20 mcg of estrogen and is taken on a cycle of 24/4 days. Yasmin was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001. Yaz birth control, also a Bayer product, was approved by the FDA in 2006.

How Does Yasmin Work?

Yasmin is a combination hormone contraceptive containing – an estrogen and a progestin. Yasmin is a fourth generation birth control that uses a different form of progestin than older contraceptives called drospirenone. Those hormones are released into the bloodstream through absorption into the bloodstream. These hormones are designed to prevent the ovaries from producing mature eggs. In addition, the lining of the uterus becomes thinner which inhibits implantation of a fertilized egg.

Is Yasmin Effective?

In one large clinical trial only 1 woman out of 100 became pregnant during the course of one year while using Yasmin birth control. The makers of Yasmin claim it is highly effective when correct and consistent methods are used when taking the pill. However, there are side effects, some of which are serious.

As with other combination hormone contraceptives, using Yasmin involves a risk of developing blood clots. Women with certain health conditions are more at risk including: prior blood clotting disorder, hypertension, over age 35 and daily smoker and prior heart attack or stroke.

What are Yasmin Side Effects?

According to the manufacturer of Yasmin, common side effects reported by Yasmin users are nausea, headache, elevated blood pressure, bleeding irregularities. More serious side effects include a higher risk of venous thrombosis (blood clots) and increased risk of breast cancer.

Studies have shown the association between later generation progestin hormones and an increased risk of blood clots and stroke. Similar to other hormone-based birth control, some people have linked Yasmin to an increased risk of blood clots including pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis, as well as stroke and heart attack.

Is There a Class Action Lawsuit Against Yasmin?

There currently is no class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of Yasmin and Yaz for problems associated with the use of the birth control. Individuals, couples, and families are filing lawsuits on their own for serious problems caused by the contraceptive. The number of these lawsuits is increasing and cases may likely be consolidated into what is referred to as multi-district litigation. If you or a loved one has suffered Yasmin side effects such as stroke, blood clot, or heart attack, you may be able to file a Yasmin lawsuit.
