Generic Yasmin
Yasmin and Yaz were originally manufactured by Berlex Laboratories and are currently manufactured by Bayer Healthcare. The generic Yasmin is called Ocella and is marketed by Teva Pharmaceuticals. Yaz birth control and the generic Ocella are relatively new contraceptive pills containing the progestin drospirenone. Unfortunately, since there are no long-term studies regarding the safety of this new synthetic hormone there is limited information regarding serious Yasmin side effects like blood clots and related complications such as heart attacks or strokes.
Yasmin and Yaz FDA Warning Letters
The manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin have come under scrutiny because of their marketing practices and promotion of these birth control products. In July 2003 the FDA issued a warning letter to Berlex Laboratories for airing misleading television commercials for Yasmin. The FDA notified the company that they were broadcasting misleading advertisements concluding, “In summary, the TV ad not only misleads consumers about the efficacy of Yasmin, the ad also minimizes important context about the health risks of the drug.”
Again in 2008, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer who was the current manufacturer of Yaz regarding another misleading advertisement. The FDA stated in their letter to Bayer, “These violations are concerning from a public health perspective because they encourage use of YAZ in circumstances other than those in which the drug has been approved, over-promise the benefits and minimize the risks associated with YAZ.”
